Beverly's horse Politics

This horse of Beverly's is a beautiful Arab Gelding that was at show for years and developed Founder from the stress of treating Lime Disease. Since the interior of the hoof really does not change in shape I only had to change the exterior of the hoof. His toe is way too long. I took up my new rasp and took his toe back to its almost natural shape. I had to go right through the hoof wall. In the future the hoof wall will grow down in its proper shape. No pain what so ever and Poitics trotted away. Not all things turn out the way they should and his foot continues to grow wrong but we will keep trying.

September 2008 Update

This is a good example of what can be done with a horse that lives in a dry area and is used quite a bit, about three times a week. In the first picture it is easy to see that trimming is way over do. This horse has tried to self trim as a wild horse does by breaking the side hoof walls away but on the toes it is still too hard to break off with out more regular use, hence the need for a trim. But with just a little work on the hoof wall and at the point of the frog and along the edge of the bars this hoof takes on a different look. Ted Evans rides plenty each week for his horses hoofs to have developed some concavity and are as hard as can be even in the rocks. He makes my job easy. It is easy to see the concavity from side to side but also from front to rear of the hoof. Just like a Mustang hoof.
